Deuteronomy - Chapter 4

1 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes [ordinances] and unto the judgments, which I teach you this day, for to do them, that ye may live, and be multiplied, and go in and possess [inherit] the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.

2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your [our] God which I command you this day.

3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD our God did because of Baal-peor: for all the men that followed Baal-peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.

4 But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.

5 Behold, I have taught you statutes [ordinances] and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess [to inherit] it.

6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

7 For what manner of nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?

8 And what manner of nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as according to all this law, which I set before you this day?

9 Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul [thy heart] diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;

10 Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy [our] God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.

11 And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds [tempest], and thick darkness.

12 And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.

13 And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even the ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.

14 And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.

15 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb in the mountain out of the midst of the fire:

16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves [transgress], and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,

17 The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air [under heaven],

18 The likeness of any thing [any reptile] that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:

19 And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest go astray and be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.

20 But the LORD God hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.

21 Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes [for the things said by you], and sware that I should not go over this Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:

22 But I must die in this land, I must not go over this Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess [inherit] that good land.

23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your [our] God, which he made with you, and ye transgress, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.

24 For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

25 When thou shalt beget children, and children’s children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger:

26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.

27 And the LORD shall scatter you among all the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen [all the nations], whither the LORD shall lead you.

28 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.

29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul in your affliction.

30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;

31 (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he, the Lord, sware unto them.

32 For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other end of heaven, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?

33 Did ever people hear the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live [and hast lived]?

34 Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm [a high arm], and by great terrors [great sights], according to all that the LORD your [our] God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

35 Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD thy God he is God; there is none else beside him.

36 Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he shewed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.

37 And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt;

38 To drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.

39 Know therefore this day, and shalt consider it in thine heart, that the LORD thy God he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else but he.

40 Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever.

41 Then Moses severed three cities on this side Jordan toward the sunrising [on the east];

42 That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:

43 Namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.

44 And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel:

45 These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses spake unto the children of Israel, after they came forth out of the land of Egypt,

46 On this side Jordan, in the valley over against Beth-peor [the house of Phogor], in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, after they were come forth out of the land of Egypt:

47 And they possessed his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites, which were on this side Jordan toward the sunrising [eastward];

48 From Aroer, which is by the bank of the river [the brook] Arnon, even unto mount Sion, which is Hermon,

49 And all the plain [Araba] on this side Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of Pisgah [under Asedoth hewn in the rock].

Numbers - Chapter 4

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

2 Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, after their families, by the house of their fathers their [fathers' households],

3 From thirty years [twenty-five] old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter into the host [that goes in to minister], to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness].

4 This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness], about the most holy things:

5 And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail [the shadowing veil], and cover the ark of testimony with it:

6 And shall put thereon the covering of badgers’ skins [a blue skin], and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.

7 And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue [all of purple], and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and the vessels with which one offers drink-offerings, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon:

8 And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers’ skins [a blue covering of skin], and shall put in the staves thereof.

9 And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels of oil thereof, wherewith they minister unto it:

10 And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers’ skins [a blue skin cover], and shall put it upon a bar [on bearers].

11 And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgers’ skins [a blue skin cover], and shall put to the staves thereof:

12 And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers’ skins [blue skin covering], and shall put them on a bar:

13 And they shall take away the ashes from the altar [and he shall put the covering on the altar], and spread a purple cloth thereon:

14 And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fire-pans, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, and the cups, and the cover, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers’ skins [a blue cover of skins], and put to the staves of it. And they shall take a purple cloth, and cover the laver and its foot, and they shall put it into a blue cover of skin, and put it on bars.

15 And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the holy vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness].

16 And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oil for the light, and the sweet incense [the incense of composition], and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the sanctuary [in the holy place], and in the vessels thereof [in all the Works].

17 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

18 Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites:

19 But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things [the holy of holies]: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:

20 But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered, lest they die.

21 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

22 Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, throughout the houses of their fathers [the houses of their lineage], by their families;

23 From thirty years old [from five and twenty years old] and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness].

24 This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve, and for burdens:

25 And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness], his covering, and the covering of the badgers’ skins [the blue cover] that is above upon it, and the hanging [the cover] for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness],

26 And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords the [appendages], and all the instruments [the vessels] of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.

27 At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them [take account of them by name] in charge all their burdens.

28 This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness]: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

29 As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them after their families, by the house of their fathers;

30 From thirty years [five and twenty years] old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness].

31 And this is [these are] the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness]; they shall bear the boards [the chapiters] of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof, and the veil, and (there shall be) their sockets, and their pillars, and the curtain of the door of the tabernacle.

32 And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden.

33 This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness], under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

34 And Moses and Aaron and the chief of the congregation [the rulers of Israel] numbered the sons of the Kohathites after their families, and after the house of their fathers,

35 From thirty years [five and twenty years] old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness]:

36 And those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.

37 These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation of witness, which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

38 And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, throughout their families, and by the house of their fathers,

39 From thirty years [five and twenty years] old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness],

40 Even those that were numbered of them, throughout their families, by the house of their fathers, were two thousand and six hundred and thirty.

41 These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness], whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment [the word] of the LORD, by the hand of Moses.

42 And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, throughout their families [their divisions], by the house of their fathers,

43 From thirty years [five and twenty years] old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness],

44 Even those that were numbered of them after their families, according to the houses of their lineage, were three thousand and two hundred.

45 These be those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

46 All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chief of Israel numbered, after their families, and after the house of their fathers,

47 From thirty years [five and twenty years] old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that came to do the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness],

48 Even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore.

49 According to the commandment [the word] of the LORD they were numbered by the hand of Moses, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Leviticus - Chapter 4

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul shall sin through ignorance [unwillingly] against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them:

3 If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people [as to cause the people to sin]; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering.

4 And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness] before the LORD; and shall lay his hand upon the bullock’s head, and kill the bullock before the LORD.

5 And the priest that is anointed, who has been consecrated, [having received of the blood of the calf] shall take of the bullock’s blood and bring it to the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness]:

6 And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seven times before the LORD, before the vail of the sanctuary.

7 And the priest shall put some of the blood of the calf upon the horns of the altar of sweet [compound] incense which before the LORD, which is in the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness]; and shall pour all the blood of the bullock at the bottom of the altar of the whole-burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation of witness.

8 And he shall take off from it all the fat of the bullock for the sin offering; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards,

9 And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away,

10 As it was taken off from the bullock of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall burn them upon the altar of the burnt offering.

11 And the skin of the bullock, and all his flesh, with his head, and with his legs, and his inwards, and his dung,

12 Even the whole bullock shall he carry forth without the camp unto a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn him on the wood with fire: where the ashes are poured out shall he be burnt.

13 And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done somewhat forbidden against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty;

14 When the sin, which they have sinned against it, is known to them, then the congregation shall offer a young bullock for the sin [an unblemished calf of the herd for a sin-offering], and bring him before the tabernacle of the congregation [witness].

15 And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the LORD: and the bullock shall be killed before the LORD.

16 And the priest that is anointed shall bring of the bullock’s blood to the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness]:

17 And the priest shall dip his finger in some of the blood of the calf, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, even before the vail of the sanctuary.

18 And the priest he shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the altar of the incense of composition, which is before the LORD, that is in the tabernacle of the congregation of witness, and shall pour out all the blood at the bottom of the altar of the whole-burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation [of witness].

19 And he shall take away all his fat from him, and burn it upon the altar.

20 And he shall do with the bullock as he did with the bullock for a sin offering, so shall he do with this: and the priest shall make an atonement for them, and it, the trespass, shall be forgiven them.

21 And they shall carry forth the calf whole without the camp, and they shall burn the calf as they burnt the former calf: it is the sin-offering of the congregation.

21 And he shall carry forth the bullock without the camp, and burn him as he burned the first bullock: it is a sin offering for the congregation.

22 When a ruler hath sinned, and done somewhat through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD his God concerning things which should not be done, and shall sin and trespass, and is guilty;

23 Or if his sin, wherein he hath sinned, come to his knowledge; he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a male without blemish:

24 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the whole-burnt offering before the LORD: it is a sin offering.

25 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of whole-burnt offering, and shall pour out his blood at the bottom of the altar of whole-burnt offering.

26 And he shall burn [offer up] all his fat upon the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall make an atonement for him as concerning his sin, and it shall be forgiven him.

27 And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance [unwillingly], while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty [shall transgress];

28 Or if his sin, which he hath sinned, come to his knowledge: then he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a female without blemish, for his sin which he hath sinned.

29 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay the kid of the sin offering in the place of the burnt offering, where they slay the [victims for] whole-burnt-offerings.

30 And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of whole-burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar.

31 And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat is taken away from off the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall burn it upon the altar for a smell of sweet savour unto the LORD; and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven him.

32 And if he bring a lamb for a sin offering, he shall bring it a female without blemish.

33 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin offering, and slay it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the whole-burnt offering.

34 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of whole-burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar of whole-burnt-offering:

35 And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of the peace offerings; and the priest shall burn them upon the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the LORD: and the priest shall make an atonement for his sin that he hath committed, and it shall be forgiven him.

Exodus - Chapter 4

1 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee, what shall I say to them?

2 And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.

3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it.

4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand:

5 That they may believe thee, that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.

6 And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow.

7 And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh.

8 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.

9 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.

10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth [given a mouth to man]? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD [God]?

12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth [open thy mouth], and teach thee what thou shalt say.

13 And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send [appoint another able [person] whom thou shalt send].

14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well [he will surely speak to thee]. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart.

15 And thou shalt speak unto him, and put my words in his mouth: and I will be with, open thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.

16 And he shall be thy spokesman for thee unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God [in things pertaining to God].

17 And thou shalt take this rod that was turned into a serpent in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs [miracles].

18 And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father in law, and said unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace. And in those days after some time, the king of Egypt died.

19 And the LORD said unto Moses in Midian, Go, return into Egypt: for all the men are dead which sought thy life.

20 And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in his hand.

21 And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall certainly not let the people go.

22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:

23 And I say unto thee, Let my son go [Send away my people], that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn.

24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the LORD [that the angel of the Lord] met him, and sought to kill him.

25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me and fell at his feet and said, The blood of the circumcision of my son is staunched].

26 So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision [The blood of the circumcision of my son is staunched].

27 And the LORD said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him [and they kissed each other].

28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD who had sent him [which he sent], and all the signs which he had commanded him [all the things which he charged him].

29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel:

30 And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD God had spoken unto Moses, and did the [the miracles] signs in the sight of the people.

31 And the people believed and rejoiced: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.

Genesis - Chapter 4

1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man [through God], from the LORD.

2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering, [a sacrifice] unto the LORD.

4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock, and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5 But unto Cain and to his offering, [his sacrifices], he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, very sorrowful, and his countenance fell.

6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? Why art thou become very sorrowful, and why is thy countenance fallen?

7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? Hast thou not sinned if thou hast brought it rightly, but not rightly divided it? And if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire; be still, to thee shall be his submission, and thou shalt rule over him.

8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: Let us go out into the plain; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper?

10 And he said, What hast thou done? The voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.

11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;

12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; thou shalt be groaning and trembling on the Earth; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.

13 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear.  My crime [is] too great for me to be forgiven.

14 Behold, If thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be groaning and trembling upon the earth, and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.

15 And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.

16 And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden, over against Edem.

17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.

18 And unto Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.

19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

21 And his brother’s name was Jubal: [he it was who invented the psaltery and harp] he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.

22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, [he was a smith, a manufacturer both of brass and iron]; an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: because [I have slain a man to my sorrow and a youth to my grief]; for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.

24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold [seventy times seven].

25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she conceived and bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: he hoped to call on the name of the Lord God; then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
